How We Review

Every non-GamStop bookmaker review published on this site is the product of a structured, multi-stage evaluation process. We do not rely on press releases, operator-supplied data, or user reviews scraped from third-party platforms. Our assessments are built from direct, first-hand experience of using each platform as a real customer — from registration through to withdrawal.

Below, we outline in full the criteria we use to evaluate and rate every bookmaker featured on our site. Understanding our methodology will help you interpret our scores and make better use of our recommendations when choosing where to place your bets.

Licensing and Safety

The first thing we check before spending a single moment on any other aspect of a bookmaker’s offering is its licensing status. We will not review, recommend, or list any operator that does not hold a valid gaming licence from a recognised regulatory authority. Operating without a legitimate licence is an immediate disqualifier.

The regulatory bodies we recognise as legitimate include the Curaçao Gaming Control Board, the Malta Gaming Authority (MGA), the Gibraltar Regulatory Authority, and the Isle of Man Gambling Supervision Commission, among others. Each of these bodies imposes specific requirements on operators relating to player fund segregation, fair gaming standards, SSL encryption, and dispute resolution.

What We Look For

Beyond the licence itself, we verify that the operator’s SSL certificate is current and properly implemented, that its terms and conditions are written in plain English and are freely accessible, and that there is a clear and functional complaints process available to customers. We also check independent player forums and review aggregators for patterns of unresolved complaints, withheld withdrawals, or bonus manipulation — all of which would negatively affect a bookmaker’s score in this category.

Sports Markets and Odds Quality

A non-GamStop bookmaker lives or dies by the quality of its sportsbook. We evaluate each operator’s sporting offer across two dimensions: breadth and depth. Breadth refers to the range of sports and competitions covered. Depth refers to the variety of markets available within each sport and competition.

An operator that covers fifty sports but offers only match winner markets for each is not, in our view, a strong sportsbook. We want to see a genuine range of betting options — handicaps, over/under markets, correct score, first goalscorer, player props, and more — across the full spectrum of sports the operator claims to cover.

Odds Comparison

We compare the odds offered by each bookmaker against those of its direct competitors across a standardised basket of events. This basket includes Premier League football, major tennis tournaments, top-tier horse racing meetings, international cricket fixtures, and selected darts events. We calculate the average overround across these markets to produce a comparable measure of odds value.

Operators that consistently offer odds closer to the true probability — i.e. with a lower overround — score more highly in this category. We also note the presence and quality of price boost promotions, which can materially improve the value available on selected markets.

Welcome Bonuses and Ongoing Promotions

Bonuses at non-GamStop bookmakers are typically far more generous than those available at UKGC-regulated operators. However, the headline figure of a welcome offer is only part of the story. The wagering requirements, minimum odds conditions, time limits, and eligible markets attached to a bonus are equally important — and these are precisely what we scrutinise.

A welcome bonus of £100 with a 40x wagering requirement and a 48-hour expiry is considerably less valuable than a £50 offer with a 5x requirement and a 30-day window. We calculate an effective bonus value for each offer to produce a like-for-like comparison across operators.

Ongoing Promotions

We also evaluate the quality and frequency of promotions available to existing customers. The best non-GamStop bookmakers reward loyalty with regular reload bonuses, cashback offers, accumulator boosts, and free bet clubs. Operators that focus all of their promotional energy on acquisition — and offer little of value to existing customers — score lower in this category.

Payment Methods and Withdrawal Speeds

One of the most significant practical advantages of betting at non-GamStop sites is the breadth of payment options available. Unlike UKGC operators, offshore bookmakers can accept credit cards and cryptocurrencies, and many support a wide range of e-wallets, instant banking services, and prepaid cards.

We evaluate each operator on the number and variety of payment methods supported, the minimum and maximum deposit and withdrawal limits, and — critically — the actual speed of withdrawals. We request withdrawals via at least two different payment methods at each bookmaker we review and record the time taken from request to funds appearing in our account.

What Good Looks Like

The best operators we have reviewed process e-wallet and cryptocurrency withdrawals within minutes. Card withdrawals at the top sites clear within a few hours. Bank transfers are inherently slower, but the best operators still manage to process these within one to two working days. Any operator where standard withdrawal requests routinely take more than five working days without clear explanation will score poorly in this category.

Mobile Experience

The majority of sports bets placed in the UK today are placed on mobile devices. A bookmaker’s mobile offering is therefore not a secondary consideration — it is central to the overall product. We test every bookmaker’s mobile experience on both iOS and Android devices, evaluating both any dedicated app and the mobile browser version of the site.

We assess page load speed, navigation ease, bet builder functionality on mobile, live betting usability, and the clarity of the cash-out interface. A mobile experience that requires excessive scrolling, suffers from slow load times, or makes it difficult to locate specific markets will be reflected in our score.

Customer Support

We contact the customer support team of every bookmaker we review using at least two different channels — typically live chat and email. We ask a mixture of straightforward and moderately complex questions and evaluate the speed, accuracy, and helpfulness of the responses we receive.

Live chat response times of under two minutes are considered good. Email responses within one to two hours during business hours are considered acceptable. Operators whose support teams provide vague, scripted, or inaccurate responses score poorly in this category, regardless of how quickly they reply.

Our Rating Scale

We rate every bookmaker on a scale of one to five, calculated as a weighted average across the six categories described above. The weightings we apply reflect what we consider to be the most important factors for the majority of UK punters:

Sports markets and odds quality carry the highest weighting, followed by payment methods and withdrawal speeds, bonuses and promotions, mobile experience, customer support, and licensing and safety. The final score is rounded to one decimal place and displayed prominently in each review.

We review and recalibrate our ratings on a rolling basis. If a bookmaker’s performance improves or deteriorates in any category, its overall rating is updated to reflect the current reality. A score published today reflects how that bookmaker performs today — not how it performed when we first reviewed it.
