The Barnaby Bright Music MASH industry masterclass programme
ran during May and June 2021 as part of Barnaby Bright, taking place online and at Macclesfield premiere music venue, Mash Guru. Open to Macclesfield musicians who responded to the competitive call, the month-long artist development programme was produced by Brighter Sound and focused on taking emerging artists’ careers to the next level through digital streaming and live performance practice. The free programme included an attendance bursary and was designed to help support musicians who have been particularly hard hit by the pandemic.
Four up-and-coming Macclesfield bands and musicians took part:
Sour Honey
are a Manchester based Alternative-Indie band. Since independently releasing their debut song ‘Dennis’ to much acclaim from BBC Introducing they are quickly becoming an interesting prospect on the UK music scene. Sour Honey’s music washes over the listener with tones of Shoe-Gaze and Dream-Pop, reminiscent of Indie bands Wolf Alice and The National.
The C33s
are a garage-punk band with an infusion of surf and psychedelia from Manchester/Macclesfield consisting of Judy Jones, Cav Green and Ste Phillips. Back in 2018 The C33s unleashed their first EP ’48 Hours at Neon Palms’ followed by five singles, each earning national radio play. Back in the studio between national lockdowns, their new EP includes the title track ‘Benzodiac’ with the EP being released on 10″” vinyl in winter 2021. If Pulp Fiction was set in a satellite town The C33s just wrote the soundtrack.
The Perps
are a four piece indie/alt guitar based rock band, based in and around the North West of England Founded in 2018 from the remnants of latent indie band ‘The Call’. The members (founding and current) are Seb Smith (lead vocals, guitar), Tom Burns (vocals, lead guitar), Arik Ross (vocals, bass guitar), and Alex Visinoni (drums, percussion).
WILLBAIN
(William Bainbridge) is rapper from Macclesfield. Will got into writing when he was young, and started rhyming/rapping around the age of 15. He’s been working on his craft ever since and has released a discography of up to 12 songs so far, with many more in progress.
The programme finished with free live-streamed showcase gig at Barnaby Bright Music Mash on 28 July, 2021. Livestreaming and films were produced by Northern Cowboys. With thanks for Tim, Kate and Rebecca at Brighter Sound, Pete and Jane, Mash Guru and to all the bands, their friends and supporters for bringing some live music back to Macc during Barnaby.
